The Latest WEB-site News

This WEB-site for the villages of Bentley and Binsted was first published to the World Wide Web on 23 December 1998. In January 1999 a major revision to the presentation of the site was completed which, hopefully, provides a more interactive experience for visitors. The site will continue to develop over time, as all WEB-sites do. So please keep visiting the site to check for additions.

The site was finally "completed" with the addition of the Binsted Pages at the beginning of August 1999.

As the New Millennium dawned Bentley and Binsted celebrated the first anniversary of their WEB-site. Yes, the WEB-site was 12 months old - a long time in Internet terms. During this first year since publication the WEB-site received almost 3000 visitors world-wide. The WEB-Site now attracts up to 3,000 visitors each month.Over the last three months of 1999 the site was particularly active with almost 1000 visitors over this period. We are very pleased that the WEB-site has proved to be so popular with visitors from all over the world and hope that it continues to attract these high levels of interest. One further item of great interest is the length of time each visitor spends viewing the site, recently this has averaged about 15 minutes per visitor.

The WEB-site now regularly receives over to 100 visitors per day and almost 3000 per month - a very encouraging and healthy level of traffic equating to about 36,000 visitors per year. So thank you to all our regular supporters.

The WEB-site has proved popular with local residents and has also received visitors from all over the world. In fact the site has proved surprisingly popular with visitors from the USA and Australia. Visitors are now extended over an even greater part of the globe and more recently the site has seen visitors from the Middle East, France, Germany, Holland, New Zealand, Japan and China.

And now ..... the residents of Scandinavia have been added to the long list of people from all over the world who have discovered the villages of Bentley and Binsted and visited the WEB-site. The world really is getting smaller each day!

In December 1999 there were some further changes to the WEB-site, some of a subtle nature and others of much more importance. For example, the changes include:

  • A new style opening page with improved clarity of navigation.
  • Automatic "browser" detection. Irrespective of whether visitors are using a version 3.0 or a version 4.0 browser they are automatically switched to the most suitable version of the page.
  • Improved compatibility for visitors using the "Apple Mac" system. The anchor technology used will now function correctly on both PCs and on Macs.

The Binsted pages have now been available since August and it is hoped that many residents and WEB-site visitors have had the opportunity to visit the pages. The help provided by Mrs Pat Seale was invaluable in completing the brief section on the history of Binsted - most appreciated.

Your WEBmaster was invited to address the Binsted Society on August 10th 1999 to talk specifically about the WEB-site and generally about the Internet and the culture of the World Wide Web. The talk seems to have been well received and, courtesy of the Binsted Society, the name of Binsted has been registered as a Domain Name. Therefore, the WEB-site can now also be located at www.binstedvillage.co.uk - many thanks to the Binsted Society for its generosity. More recentley www.binstedvillage.comm has also been registered.

The TV series "The Village" is now being shown in Australia and, we hear, in Iceland, no doubt stimulating interest in the WEB-site among residents in those countries. Rumour has it (stress rumour) that the TV series is also scheduled for the USA. Therefore the combined effect of the WEB-site and introduction of the TV series to a wider viewing audience should certainly create increasing world-wide awareness of this small corner of Hampshire.

Messages continue to be received from visitors in countries as far afield as Australia, including many asking questions about "The Village" TV series and the characters involved. Also a number of people intend visiting Bentley and Binsted either as a result of seeing "The Village" series on TV or after having seen the WEB-site. It seems that "The Village" programme is currently being shown again in parts of Australia - the messages from Australian viewers have started to increase again.

The latest news is that "The Village" TV series is now being shown in Norway and E-mails have been received from interested viewers in that country.

Publicity for the WEB-site has been boosted by an articles in the Parish Magazine and the local press and by a local radio interview with Delta FM.

However, local residents and organisations can play a major role in the continuing success of the WEB-site - indeed, their role is critical to maintaining an interactive element. Please advise of any news items or local events, you will be surprised at the extra publicity which can be gained.

Contributions from viewers of "The Village" programme in Australia and other countries could also provide a valuable contribution. Send us your news and stories, if they are relevant we will publish what you send.

About the WEB-site

For those new to the WEB-site or to the TV series:

The village of Bentley has been the subject of a major and very successful radio and TV series "The Village"and, as a consequence, is now well known. The village of Binsted, however, always seems to be forgotten - even though many of the "scenes" and characters in the series have their origins in Binsted. One objective for this WEB-site is to put the record straight and place Binsted in true perspective. In fact a number of Bentley addresses actually fall within the area of Binsted Parish Council.

Visitors should be aware that the main purpose of this WEB-site is to complement the TV series not to compete with it - the site has a completely different set of priorities and a different focus.

Residents of Binsted will be pleased to know that the Binsted pages were completed at the beginning of August 1999 and are accessible by all visitors to the WEB-site

  Objectives are to:
Provide an illustrated tour of the villages, their history, the churches and the local community.
  Promote local organisations and events.
Open an Internet News Channel for the local community.
Provide a platform for the promotion for local businesses and services.
